Hydrometer

The S1245 Soil Hydrometer Type A has seamless and symmetrical bulb and is accurately calibrated to reduce errors caused by variable dilution. The hydrometer is graduated in grams of soil colloids per liter (Bouyoucos Scale). The temperature of standard is 68°F. The scale range is 5 to 60 grams with 1 gm divisions (ASTM 152H) which meets ASTM method D-422 and AASHTO method T-88. Total length of the hydrometer is 11" (280mm). The S1246 Hydrometer Type B is similar to the S1245 except that it is graduated 0.995 to 1.038 specific gravity and the temperature of standard is 68 Degree/68 Degree F. The ASTM scale is 151H. The S1247 Thermo-Hydrometer is for liquids heavier than water. The thermometer has a range of 20°F to 130°F (2°F divisions).

Sample Cutter and Trimmer

The S9362 sample cutter is for preparing soils for consolidation and shear tests. The circular cutter is 2.5" in diameter and is constructed from hardened steel, cadmium plated. Soil Penetrometer (Pocket Type)

The S4651 pocket penetrometer is a hand held device that is used to make field classifications of soil type and unconfined compressive strength. The penetrometer is a spring loaded device with a 1/4" diameter piston that has a surface area of .05 sq in, that is pushed a 1/4" into the soil. The gauge is direct reading in tons per square foot or kilograms per square centimeter.

Hydrometer Jar

The S1251 calibrated Hydrometer jar is used with the hydrometer to determine the amount of soil in dispersed suspensions. The jar has a heavy beaded finish at the top and white graduation rings. The graduation ring and capacity is 1000 ML at 20°C (68°F). The height is 460mm with an O.D. of 2-1/2". The S1255 is very similar except that the graduation ring is at 1130 ML and 1205 ML.

Tampers

These tampers are used along with the proctor molds to prepare moisture density samples for the proctor test. There are three types of tampers, 5-1/2 lb with a 12" drop, 10 lb with an 18" drop, and 5-1/2 lb with an 18" drop. The tamper weights have a 2" diameter face. The guide tubes have vents to prevent any air pressure from developing and all parts are plated to prevent rusting. The S3143 tamper is not required by ASTM or AASHTO. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tamper is guided on a shaft instead of a sleeve. The length of the drop is slightly adjustable. The foot assembly has a recoil mechanism which reduces the impact and the fatigue on parts.

Sand Cones

The sand cone density test is a simple in-situ procedure for determination of soil density. The test is performed by removing and weighing an amount of soil, determining the moisture content, filling the hole with calibrated sand from a sand cone and computing the volume of the hole from the weight of sand used. Dry density and moisture content are reported. The sand cones are available in two sizes, 4" and 6-1/2" diameter openings. They are constructed entirely of brass to prevent corrosion. The 4" sand cones are furnished complete with a 2 quart glass jar. The 6-1/2" sand cones are furnished complete with a 1 gallon plastic jar. The S3621 12" Sand Cone is for determining the density of soils with large aggregates (AASHTO T-181) and is an alternative to AASHTO T-191. This sand cone is furnished with a control valve, aluminium rings, supports, aluminum container with plastic viewing insert, and aluminum base plate. The S3631 Direct Reading Sand Cone reduces time, work and expense of the test and exceeds required standards. The cylinder is graduated from 0.4 to 0.110 ft. cu. by 0.002 readable to about 0.0005. Also furnished with a soil tray which is not pictured. Also available X6711 & X6721 Ottawa Sand which is specifically graded for ASTM tests. The X6711 is 20-30 mesh which meets ASTM C-778, D1556 and AASHTO T-132 while the X6721 is 16-100 mesh meeting ASTM C-778 and AASHTO T-106. X6731 Density Sand is clean, dry, uniform, uncemented, durable and free flowing. Few particles pass a #200 sieve or are retained on a #10 sieve.

Compaction Molds

These compaction molds are available in 4" and 6" diameter models. The 4" ID. molds are 4.584" high and 1/30 cu. ft. which are available in plain, split and tapered versions. The 6" ID. molds are 4.584" high and 1/13.33 cu. ft. which are available in plain and split versions. These molds are used along with the tampers, that are listed on page 133, to determine the relationship between the moisture content and the density of compacted soils. This is also known as the proctor test. Soil samples are easily removed from split and tapered molds. Plain mold samples are easily removed using a S3415 core ejector. The molds are furnished complete with base, tie down rods and wing nuts, collar and mold body. They are constructed from cold-rolled steel and plated for rust resistance.

Pocket Vane Shear Tester

The S4951 Pocket Vane Shear Tester is a soil testing instrument for the rapid determination of shear strength of cohesive soils either in the field or laboratory. The vane shear tester is equipped with a disc (vane) with blades on one side which are pressed into the soil to be tested with a maintained constant vertical pressure while turning the knob. After test is completed the index mark on the knob will indicate the maximum shear value. The vane shear tester does not specifically indicate exact shear strength characteristics, but rather identifies strength variations with depth and zones of weakness in the subsoil. The standard vane has a stress range from 0 to 1 kg/cm2. The standard vane is used with fully saturated cohesive soils. A large vane is provided for use with remolded samples and has a ratio of 0.2 and a smaller vane for stiffer clays has a 2.5 ratio. A plastic case is provided.

Table Top Consolidometer

The lever loaded table top Consolidometer is constructed from high strength aluminum alloy giving a minimum frame distortion even under high loads. The cell platform accepts samples up to 4" or 100mm dia. The two pivot shaft bearings permit free movement of the beam while maintaining the alignment and a spherically seated needle bearing attached to the yoke assures perfect alignment without side loading. Shocks to the sample are avoided by using the supporting jack while each weight is added. The apparatus is furnished with a weight set which will give even incremental loading from 1/4 tsf to its capacity on a 2.5" dia sample. The 16 tsf weight set consists of 2-1/4", 1-1/2", 1, 1/2 and 3/4 tsf weights. A 2.5" dia fixed ring cell with a capacity of performing permeability test is included. The cell can be converted to a floating ring cell by adding an adapter set. The Consolidometer is furnished complete with a 2.5" dia fixed ring cell, calibrated weights, 0.5" travel counter clockwise dial indicator reading to 0.0001" and instructions. The Consolidometer is available in 16 TSF, 32 TSF, and 48 TSF.

Rigid Wall Permeameter

Developed to measure the permeability of stiffer soils, such as clays, the Rigid Wall Permeameter is very easy to set up and use. The specimen is cut to size using a stainless steel cutting ring which is included. The ends are trimmed square and the specimen and ring are placed between the two cell halves. Constructed of a see-through acrylic top and an anodized aluminum base, the complete assembly is sealed with a simple O-ring. Porous stones contain the specimen and prevent migration of material. Water volume is measured on a graduated burette attached to the bottom valve. Also included is a 2 cc pipet and tubing. Pocket Geotester

The S4641 Pocket Geotester dial penetrometer set is perfect for on-site measurement of soil compaction by testing the foundation plane or boring samples. The geotester gives readings of estimated unconfined compressive strength in TSF or kg/cm2 when used with the standard 1/4" dia. plunger. Readings can also be taken with the 10, 15, 20, 25mm dia. plungers which deliver guidelines to safe bearing pressures for foundations in consolidated soils. The maximum value is retained on the dial until it is released by a push button. The inner dial scale has readings of 0-6.0 x 0.1 divs. in TSF or kg/cm2 and the outer scale delivers load strength over 0-11 kg range x 0.1 kg divs. The dial is 2-1/2" and has a sturdy noncorrosive construction. Calibration is achieved by the operator using the supplied register plates. The geotester is furnished with stainless steel plungers, carrying case, data tables, register plates and instructions.

Liquid Limit Device

The characteristics of soils can be changed by the moisture content of the soil. The liquid limit of a soil is the moisture content in which a soil passes from the plastic state to the liquid state. This liquid limit device uses the Casagrande method in which a soil pat is placed in the brass cup, divided using the grooving tool, and then subjected to a series of blows from a given height against a rubber base of known rebound until the soil meets along a certain distance. The S1451 durometer is used to test the hardness of the base of a Liquid Limit Machine. The durometer features sealed springs to maintain load deflection rate to a tolerance of 0.0004". The precision construction delivers lifetime accuracy. The S1452 Resiliency Tester is used to test the hard rubber base of liquid limit machines, which should be performed at 90-day intervals to insure the base is in compliance with ASTM standards. The device consists of a clear acrylic plastic tube and cap, a 5/16" diameter steel ball and a small bar magnet.

Shelby Tube Permeameter

Created to save both time and money in the laboratory and allow permeability testing in an almost in-sit condition. By performing the test in the actual Shelby tube liner, the set-up time and labor are reduced. It is especially suited for cohesionless materials and sands, which normally require extensive time and handling to transfer to a standard permeability cell. It contsists of two sets of end caps that fit over a standard 2.5" or 3.0" Shelby tube liner up to 6.0" long (not included). Each end cap contains a valve to control the flow of permeants through the specimen, along with a porous stone to prevent material from flowing into and clogging the valve. The end caps clamp down on an o'ring and seal against the Shelby tube. The end caps are anodized aluminum for corrosion resistance and are held together with connecting rods and clamping knobs.

Compaction Permeameters

These compaction permeameters are designed for measuring water that passes through soils and other materials including sand, clay, gravel, and silt. The permeameters can also be used for either constant head or falling head studies on undisturbed, compacted or remolded soils. The center mold and collar sections are very similar to the S3111. The upper plate of the mold has an inlet/outlet connector and overflow valves for air removal. The base plate also has inlet/outlet connector. The mold is plated steel which resists corrosion. A porous stone filter is also furnished.

Soil Dispersion Mixer

When performing the hydrometer method of testing subgrade soils this mixer is used for dispersing soil suspensions. The mixer operates at speeds above 13,000 RPM (no load) and has three speeds for maximum mixing flexibility. The mixer is furnished with a chrome-plated dispersion cup and a steel-plated stirring paddle. The front panel is stainless steel while the housing is die-cast aluminum. Balloon Density Tester

The determination of soil density by balloon method is similar to the sand cone method. The soil sample is removed, weighed and dried then weighed again and the moisture content is determined. The resulting volume of the hole is then measured by forcing water into a balloon to fill the hole and then reading the volume on the graduated tube that is measured in both cu. ft. and cu. cm. Soil Penetrometer (Needle Type)

The S3251 penetrometer is used to perform moisture-penetration tests. In the penetration test a needle of given end area is pushed into a soil sample that has been compacted in a mold. The force is then directly read off the penetrometer scale by use of an internal calibrated spring. A moisture-penetration curve can then be plotted and used to indicate moisture and density in the field. The penetrometer is furnished with seven graduated needles of different surface areas. Needles included 1", 3/4", 1/2", 1/3", 1/5", 1/10", 1/20".

Permeameter

The S2351 Permeameter for 2-1/2" diameter soil specimens is used for falling head conditions. The apparatus is designed to determine the permeability of porous soils and quicksand demonstrations. The clear plastic chamber is 2-1/2" ID and 11-1/2" long. The permeameter is furnished with a piezometer tube, scale, water fittings, porous stones and pedestal base. The S2353 combination permeameter tests 2-1/2" diameter soil specimens which can be assembled for either constant head or falling head conditions. Core Ejectors

The S3415 Vertical Core Ejector is used for removing soil cores from molds or tubes. The mold is placed in the frame and the core is extruded by a hydraulic jack. The ejector is designed for 6" diameter cores with adapters for 2", 3", and 4". The S3421 Horizontal Core Ejector is designed for 2" and 3" O.D. tubes. It is a mechanical type for thin wall sample tubes. The ejector has a two-speed gear box jack and can be used with samples up to 36" long. Also furnished with this ejector are piston and grips for 2" and 3" O.D. tubes. Also available is an adapter (S3425) for 2-1/2" tubes. The S3431 & S3432 Motorized Core ejector is for fast ejection of soil cores used with 2" and 3" thin wall tubes up to 36" long. Since there is no cutting involved the tubes can be reused. The ejector is designed for use in a vertical position but can be used in horizontal position with the aid of the S3435 Trough. The hydraulic cylinder is operated by an electric pump with control valve to regulate travel speed and for fast retraction.

Sand / Gravel Permeameters

Designed to determine the coefficient of permeability by the constant head method for the laminar flow of water through granular soils. The permeameters are available in four sizes. Shown is the 3" model. The distance between manometer ports is the same as the diameter. The permeameter features two manometer ports that are grooved and screened on the inside. The screens (100 mesh brass) are used to prevent migration of material through the valves and tubing during testing. The chamber is acrylic to permit viewing of the sample during the test. End caps and clamping ring are anodized aluminum. Each chamber is equipped with valves; either porous stones or perforated screens; and tubing for connection to a water source, vacuum and manometer tubes. A spring is incorporated into the top cap to apply 5-10 lbs. force against the top stone or screen to prevent soil density changes during the test. Permeameters without the manometer outlets are also available on request. MEETS ASTM D-2434 SPECIFICATIONS. The S2364 & S2365 Manometer Panel is an economical Manometer Tube Stand for use with many of our permeameters. It features two acrylic tubes with valving mounted on an aluminum rail. A 100 cm long scale, with cm and mm graduations, is affixed to the rail between the two tubes for monitoring flow volumes. Each tube has its own valve, making it possible to run two independent permeability tests. Two models are available, wall mounted and free standing. The free standing unit has a base plate, allowing it to stand alone on a countertop in the lab. The S2366 Constant Head Tank is an acrylic tank with regulating valve for flow control of water and a porous media on bottom to filter out air bubbles. The unit maintains a constant water head by utilizing an overflow port. It also allows connection to a tap water or deaired water source. Support is provided with wall mount rails and the height is easily adjusted with moveable brackets. The unit is equipped with a saddle valve for connection to a water source and necessary tubing for hook-up to the test chamber. The S2367 Compacting Hammer uses a rod with sliding weights on a 51mm (2.0") diameter foot. A stop is provided for adjusting the height of the drop up to 203mm (8.0"). The weights are 100 g (0.25 lbs.) and 1 kg (2.25 lbs.)

Harvard Miniature Compaction Apparatus

The S3521 Harvard Miniature Compaction Apparatus is used for moisture density tests of soils using small samples and duplicating the sheepsfoot roller type of compaction. The apparatus is furnished with a specimen ejector, collar remover with spacer plate, mold holder, mold and collar, compaction tamper with 20 lb. and 40 lb. spring and instructions. The mold is machined from seamless tubing and has a volume of 1/45 ft3 and is 1.3" I.D. by 2.816" H. Hand Cranked Unconfined Load Frame

This load frame is designed to perform Unconfined testing of cohesive and semi-cohesive soils by manual operation using an aluminum hand crank. The load capacity is 1,000 lbs. Modifications to meet your lab's specific applications are available upon request. The maximum platen travel is 76 mm (3"). Unit completes with 1" range x .001" lb. load ring with calibration chart. A quick return feature for repositioning the platen after completing the test is standard. Maximum sample height is 10". The load ring cross arm is adjustable vertically and the load ring is bolted directly to the cross arm to maximize side deflection when testing samples. The frame is designed around a heavy-duty main frame and precision loading screw. Built to withstand harsh lab environments, the cabinet is constructed with 14 gauge steel and painted with a durable enamel finish. The 1" diameter vertical rods have coarse threads for quick change in cross-arm height. The nuts and vertical rods are plated for corrosion resistance. A 3" diameter platen with concentric rings are protective boot for the loading screw is standard. Load ring sold separately.

Double Ring Infiltrometer

The double ring infiltrometer is the only accepted field method for determining the rate of infiltration of liquids into soils. The S3231 is the double ring apparatus only which includes 12" and 24" aluminum rings which have one beveled edge, 2 constant level float valves which maintain the proper liquid level, 2 individually calibrated plastic cylinders. One cylinder is graduated to 5,000 ml and the other is to 13,000 ml and with the special supports the cylinders are prevented from tipping and, therefore, maintain the proper height. Also included with the apparatus are splash guards, tamper, driving cap, pad of data sheets and instructions. The S3235 includes all the parts in S3231 and in addition a rubber mallet, small sledge hammer, water bucket with pouring spout, carpenter's level, dial thermometer, pH paper, wood block to drive cap assembly and long handled shovel.

Microwave Moisture Meter

The S1960 Microwave Moisture Meter is a break-through in modern moisture measurement technology. By utilizing the latest microwave ns microprocessor technology, the S1960 can determine the moisture content of sand, gravel, crushed stone and other fine and coarse aggregate. Simply insert the prongs of the probe into the material to be measured and instantaneously the percentage of moisture content is shown on the easy to read display. The unit comes calibrated for both sand and aggregate. It can also be programmed with up to ten different materials by the user. California Bearing Ratio (CBR) for Lab

For determining the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of soils and to evaluate the relative quantity of subgrade and subbase soils and some base course materials. Soil samples are mixed with varying quantities of water, compacted in a mold by a tamper, weighed and the dry compacted density determined. A perforated plate with adjustable stem and surcharge weights are placed on the specimen and the mold and weights soaked in water. The initial height and the height after given periods of soaking are determined by a micrometer dial mounted on a tripod and the sample swell reported as the percentage of the initial height. The sample is penetrated by a piston at a constant rate and the load required for penetration to different depths is recorded.

MANUAL CBR LOADING MACHINE
The S4242 determines bearing ratio of soil when compacted and tested in the lab. It compares the penetration load of the soil to that of a standard material. The Manual CBR Loading Machine utilizes a three speed mechanical jack for test speeds and for rapid travel. The machine meets ASTM D-1883 and AASHTO T-193 when the operator accurately cranks to the required test speed of 0.05"/min. The loading machine is furnished with a 10,000 lbf calibrated load ring with dial indicator. If the soils vary widely in strength, it is advisable to order extra lower capacity load rings such as the G3832 (2,000 lb) or a G3836 (6,000 lb). The S4111 CBR cylinder mold is 6" ID x 7" high. The perforated base is 8" x 8" x 3/8" plated steel and is fitted with threaded rods and thumb nuts.

MOTORIZED LOADING MACHINE
The S4251 & S4252 Motorized Loading Machine is very similar in design and application to the S4242 except that it is motorized with preset speed selections. The motor drives the machine at a constant rate of 0.05"/min. The S4252 is 220V/50Hz version.

MASTER-LOADER MULTI-USE COMPRESSION TESTER
The S4254 Master Loader handles a variety of tests with one load frame (Marshall, CBR, Unconfind, Unconsolidated undrained triaxial). Bench mounted unit features pre-set speed selections and accessories. Variable speed setting allows stepless adjustments from 0.002" to 2.000" per minute.

Pneumatic Consolidation Load Frame

This pneumatic load frame for stress controlled consolidation testing. It was designed to apply loads instantaneously and to maintain any set load, regardless of sample compression occurring within the loading interval. They are available in three load ranges based on a 2.5" diameter sample: 16 tsf, 32 tsf and 64 tsf. Over 1500 CONBELSr are in use Worldwide and this series is a refinement of the original design and incorporates featres that offer greater sensitivity and ease of operation. A large pneumatic piston, handles loads p to 16, 32 or 64 tsf. This model utilizes a Fairchild low-bleed type of pressure regulator to set and maintain the load on the specimen. Known for their precision, this regulator is sensitive to 1/8" variations in water column. It requires a source of compressed air fix operation. The unit is self-contained with a built-in digital readout and pressure transducer with 0.1% linearity. Fabricated to survive harsh laboratory environments, the cabinets are steel and painted with a durable enamel. The load platform consists of 1" thick aluminum plate. Vertical rods are made from stainless steel. The load platform features adjustable centering pads to aid in aligning the consolidometer. It will accept any consolidometer, regardless of manufacurer, up to a medium diameter 7.25" (184 mm). The unit has many advantages including instantaneous loading without impact, complete flexibility in choice of loads, relatively insensitive to shock or inertia forces and compact size allows for table top operation.

Trafficability Set

The S3764 Trafficability set is designed to meet the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) field bearing test for vehicle use. The set consists of a piston type sampler which obtains soil cores and determines soil density. The piston type sampler has a hollow tube with handles and plunger with a detachable sampling tube. Also included with the set is a remolding set which consists of a cylinder with the same diameter as the sampling tube, a base with pedestal and a drop weight tamper with foot for dropping a 2-1/2 lb. weight with 18" drop. The third part of the set consists of an ACOE type cone penetrometer similar to the S4612. A canvas carrying case and operating instructions are also furnished with the set.

Unconfined Compression Machine

The Unconfined Compression machine is used for determining the compressive strength of undisturbed or remolded soil samples. The undisturbed or molded soil cores are placed between platens in a compression machine, loaded by strain-controlled or stress-controlled method and the load at failure recorded. Automatic Soil Compactor

This machine is designed to automatically compact soil samples for proctor testing in a quick and efficient manner. This machine replaces older time consuming hand compaction with a tamper testing. This unit is used for standard or modified tests. The rammer weight is adjustable from 5-1/2 to 10 lbs and the drop height can be set for either 12" or 18". The compactor accommodates either 4" or 6" molds. The unit is equipped with an automatic counter that shuts off the machine after a preset number of blows have been met. The molds are mounted on a circular base and are rotated throughout the process to assure good compaction of the entire soil surface. The compactor is furnished complete with a 4" and a 6" mold, and a 5-1/2 lb. and a 10 lb hammer. The 5-1/2 lb hammer has a circular face and the 10 lb hammer has a pie shaped face for 6" molds. The S3391 & S3392 are very similar to the aforementioned compactors. The difference is a 25" instead of a 14" clearance and they also cannot use the 5-1/2 lb round or pie shape hammer. This compactor was developed specifically for California in which a mold 16" in height is used. Hogentogler recommends the S3361 & S3362 unless there is a specific need.

Dead Weight Direct / Residual Shear

The S6608 Dead Weight Direct / Residual Shear unit utilizes a dead weight loading system with a 10:1 beam for applying he vertical load to the sample. The device is a compact, self-contained unit requiring little floor space and the built-in floor stand has heavy duty casters for ease of movement around the lab. A load cell with digital readout is used for measuring shear forces. The vertical and shear displacement is measured with dial indicators (0.5" x 0.0001" RES. and 1.0" x 0.001" RES.). The basic unit includes 2.5" diameter shear rings, porous stones, drainage plates and water chamber. Other sizes are available. Maximum shear displacement is 0.8". Travel is set with limit switches. Pneumatic Direct / Residual Shear

This latest direct shear utilizes the Karol-Warner CONBELr pneumatic loading concept for applying the vertical load to the sample. The self contained table top model eliminates the need for numerous weights used in dead weight systems. Sample loads are obtained by the use of two pneumatic pistons. This new concept increases the accuracy and sensitivity of light load settings. A small diameter rolling diaphragm piston is capable of applying loads from 4 lbs. up to 100 lbs., which is helpful when working with light vertical loads. A larger diameter piston applies loads up to 1500 lbs. Applying the vertical load is accomplished by setting the precision regulator to the required pressure per the calibration chart. Load settings are verified on a pressure readout that reads to 2 decimal places and is accurate to 0.25%. All models have built-in readouts for pressure and load which are used for setting the vertical load and measuring shear forces.

The basic direct shear frame S6610, is supplied with a dial indicator to measure vertical and shear displacement. The digital version contains the latest in micro processor controls. The S6612 features a display for viewing all test parameaters including residual cycle count, strain rate, shear load and vertical load setting. Displacement transducers are used for horizontal and vertical measurements. Data output to a computer is via an RS232 cable. This allows the user to input the data directly into a test file for later analysis in a spreadsheet program. Motorized Direct Shear Machine

The S6572 Motorized Direct Shear Machine is used for determining the consolidated drained shear strength of soil samples in direct shear. The shear force is applied by a gear box type loading jack with speeds variable from 0.001 to 1.2 mm/min in increments of 0.001 by setting the desired speed rate indicated by a crystal display. Residual shear can be measured by reversing the direction. Shear force is measured by a proving ring with dial. Vertical load is applied by adding weights to a lever with hanger. The machine is furnished with micrometer dials, and a proving ring with dial and weights. The machine is not supplied with a shear box and cutter.

Geostar Triaxial Equipment

A totally automated computer based triaxial testing system is a follow up to its highly successful GeoStar consolidation testing equipment. The new system was developed in conjunction with a Finnish University and consulting group. This apparatus allows a single computer to control a complete triaxial test set plus up to three consolidation and one direct shear loading frame. All frames are computer controlled for an infinitely variable rate of strain loading. The ease of use of this economically priced system allows laboratory managers a new degree of accuracy in test results with a corresponding decrease in labor content for completed tests. All test results are achieved on the master computer and can be printed in a report ready format using a laser printer.
